Chompy Speaks

Hello,

for the past several weeks I have been working on animating my Chompy character rig using audio.

I had hoped to work or at least experiment with a movie clip or game sound byte and sync the Chompy character. I have two examples of my work to show.

-The first is a sound clip from the game Left 4 Dead where Louis (game caharacter) comments on the lack of a weekly magazine.

-The second video is an audio clip from Back to the future where Marty is commenting about the Doctor's new invention and it being nuclear powered.

Welcome to a new old character: Chompy

Hello again,
I was recently working on redesigning an old character I made in Maya I called "Chompy".
I had made the design for chompy years ago from some modelling clay which I took photos of, scanned them into photoshop and then used as reference for the 3d model.
I just recently decided to remake this gaping maw with legs in 3ds max using some redrawn character sketches:

Here is a short movie clip of his (failed) attempt to climb a wall:

Small Changes

Hello,

I have recently been working on redesigning parts of the Bronze Golem. The biggest change is the replacing of the hand lances with an actual spear prop.

I didn't think the lance coming out from the hand was a good idea so I spent some a little time making a spear prop and altering some of the poses.
Here is what the character looks like so far:

Here is a video of a spear tossing animation for the golem. I have another animation showing the spear arc. Maybe later I will upload it.

New Golems

Hello,

These past few weeks since my last entry have been spent coming up with new ideas to expand the world of my game. I have been thinking up new ways to make the card game more complex and interesting to the player and at the same time maintain a balance that is very important to my game.

I have recently been working on making an expansion for the golem cards called glyphs. these cards are placed on the golem of the player's golem or the opponent's golem. the glyph card remain on the golem until they are removed and strengthen or weaken the golem.

Examples include healing the golem every round or reducing the amount of damage that a golem can give. I think that these glyphs would be used by the player to strengthen a play-style or to handicap the opponent.

My second work is on a new golem type: Metal.

A metal golem uses moves and attacks that deal damage while slowly whittling down an opponents ability to attack. an example of this would be using a shield to block some damage while still dealing damage to the opponent.
Visually the metal golems take on the form of ancient military designs such as the European Knight, and the ancient Greek Hoplite. This is shown in the form of my new 3d Golem: the Bronze Golem.

A drawn example I used for my reference:

Using this reference image I then modelled the character, modelled the helmet and armour, and added morph targets I had altered such as a shield on the forearm and a lance on the wrist. I then rigged the golem using 3ds Max's Biped, painted the skin weights that the biped bones control, and gave the golem a coppery bronze texture using Mental Ray's archmat Material. After that I began my work on posing the golem for the cards.

Here is a test render of the golem in a pose:

This is a still for the golem card I will be designing in the near future:

Here are a few of the golem card action poses I might use. These are before I begin creating the cards and designing the card background:

Back in the game

Well after several months of hiatus I am working on my Blog again. My summer job took some of my time away from me.

Now for some old but great news. I had managed to publish several copies of my game and have set up a consignment deal with a local game store and anime shop. 5 copies of clay and 5 copies of mineral decks were offered in consignment.

I sold my first copy of the Golem card game back in July. It was an interesting feeling for me. To actually work on a project and have it sell is something I am not accustomed to and I was excited about the prospects to say the least. The store has some special events occasionally and I might go out of my way to talk about my game there and get it noticed som more.

Card Game: Prototype Ad

One other item that I was desigining for my advanced studio class was something of an advertisement for marketting the game itself. Because of the posed nature of the cards themselves some of the motions would not be very hard to conceptualize.

While I created this current work I think I could take it a bit further. and may do so in the future.

I consider this a prototype for an ad. Take it as you will. Comments are welcome.

Finished Cards

Hello,

I finished designing and printing two seperate decks of cards. While the cards themselves I believe are in a complete package and ready for public show there is more I would like to do with this game.

There are numerous new golems to make, I have several expansions planned, and I am thinking of new places to go with the game itself.

I enjoyed making the cards so far and am looking forward to designing new cards.

Here are the designs I have so far:
